I just got the WolfBox G900 Pro and it came with the OBDII hardwire power kit. I am hearing this cable may not always work and might drain my battery. I camp a lot so am curious if I should do the fuse kit instead or is OBD kit solid? I'd rather not buy the fuse kit if the OBD kit works fine and installs easier. Thanks.

I have been using mine for over 8 months with no issues. When I connect the battery to my garage trickle charger, I disconnect the cable, as sometimes it acts weird. No battery drainage at all, but if you are concerned, disconnecting it is easy. Connection to the port is very secure.

The short answer is no, it will not drain your battery to the point of a dead car under normal circumstances, thanks to a built-in safety feature. However, there are a few important caveats regarding how it handles power consumption and your vehicle's specific setup. The OBDII port provides a constant stream of 12V power directly from your car’s battery, even when the engine is completely turned off. To prevent a dead battery, the WolfBox OBDII kit features Smart Low Voltage Protection.

The adapter continuously monitors your vehicle's battery voltage. For the Type-C OBD kit, if the vehicle's voltage drops below 13V (or a set threshold like 11.8V–12.0V depending on the specific kit version) after the car is shut down, it will typically allow the dash cam to record for a brief window (e.g., 5 minutes) or run parking mode until the threshold is hit, and then completely cut power to the camera. The dash cam shuts off entirely, preserving enough cold-cranking amps (CCA) for your engine to start safely the next time you get in.

How long the kit draws power before cutting off depends entirely on your dash cam configuration. If you disable parking mode in your camera settings, the camera shuts down shortly after the engine stops. The kit will stop supplying significant power, resulting in zero noticeable battery drain. When using the Collision / G-Sensor Mode, the camera remains in a low-power standby mode. It only writes data to the SD card if the internal G-sensor detects a physical impact. This uses very minimal power. When using the Time-Lapse Mode, the camera records continuously at a lower frame rate while parked. This draws the most power and will trigger the kit's low-voltage cutoff much faster.

If your car battery is aging or already struggling to hold a full charge, the voltage might drop very rapidly. While the cutoff will still trigger to protect the battery, your camera’s parking coverage window will be significantly shorter. If you leave your vehicle sitting undriven for weeks at a time, natural parasitic drain from the vehicle combined with the tiny standby draw of the OBD kit can slowly deplete a battery. If you are parking long-term in a secure location (like a closed home garage), it is best to simply unplug the Type-C cable from the camera or the OBD port. Freezing temperatures drastically reduce a car battery's capacity and chemical efficiency. In deep winter, the voltage threshold will be reached much quicker. If you drive your vehicle regularly (at least a few times a week), the WolfBox OBDII kit is highly reliable and safe to use without worrying about a dead battery. If you plan to leave the vehicle sitting idle for extended periods, turning parking mode off in the camera menu or unplugging the power cord is the safest habit to adopt.
