If you'll be in areas with trees you could make a flip-flop winch. You'll need 3/8 or 1/2 inch synthetic line and an axe or large saw. Or you could carry a couple of round fence posts.

Anyone opt for a satellite communicator like a Zoleo or InReach, or a spendy satellite navigator like the Garmin Tread2? Or the high-end walkie-talkie LTE radios like Rapid or Rocky Talkie?
I upgraded my iPhone so I could send satellite text messages.
If I need more, I’ll go Starlink.

Here's a good first aid kit from a great company. It's made to mount on a MOLLE panel too. It's the cheapest I've ever seen it right now.

That reminds me-need to restock our first aid kit after the rubicon. Jeeps just be falling off their jacks on to people! (I slept right through it but wifey took care of them. Again another case where our emergency stuff was used for someone else)

Funny how those who plan for emergencies usually end up using their "stuff" to help those who don't plan instead of using it for themselves.

Seems there's a mindset that helps them avoid trouble in the first place.

GMRS enables emergency comms? Or are you having to connect to someone you know? No details on the pistols? šŸ˜Ž
GMRS is what most people in this area run off highway. I could ask for assistance in areas of no cell. I have the FNFAL with folding stock and 30 rounds of hate. The S&W .357 for melancholy times. I carry the LCP2 in the pocket for love.

starlink and OnX are options too.
Yes we use a Zoleo, pre programmed to reliable people who know we are traveling, and to emergency services.

I too have an S&W .357! It’s a very honest-with-you friend.

Starlink has been good enough for me. It can get blocked by trees, but it's fairly portable and I can pop it out and move it around if I need to.

Oh man that would scare me to death. So much walking around that rope needed to flip flop that and if it snapped or slipped, or one of your logs broke... ouch.

Ingenious idea if you are royally screwed I suppose though.

You could always use manila rope. It doesn't stretch so there's no snap back if it breaks.

Great list! I made a blog about this a few months back I would also like to share, hope that’s okay.

https://www.kentuckianabroncooffroadmeets.com/blog-1-1/essential-items-to-take-off-road
Frankie, thanks. Blog post was very thorough. The problem for newcomers like me is that if you add up the items on your list, all of which you term ā€œessentialsā€, you’re saying ā€˜here’s another several thousands of dollars every owner needs to spend before you can safely get off the pavement.’

I’m not averse to spending the money in manageable chunks, but does every Bronco owner really need (for example) a winch, spare tie rods and cv shafts and a chainsaw? I’d be interested to hear how you would prioritize the ten most important items, or say a budget of $1500-2000.

Idk about needing to get everything on his list all at once before leaving pavement, but as for the spare tie rods I would take at least one with me with tools to change it. They're small and cheap enough. I could see the argument for not getting a winch since they are on the more expensive of something that you might never use.

In my personal outlook I still view a lot of stuff as "rather have it and not need it vs need it and not have it"......to a point, easy to get carried away with that mindset and next thing you know your towing a spare bronco, towing company, hospital, restaurant, and garage through the trails.
