It sounds like your clutch is not engaging fully and there is something wrong with the cylinder or assist, or something like that.
What you’re describing it sounds like it’s slipping instead of fully engaging for some reason.
It’s the proportions, most 4 x 4’s are narrow and tall, this one is flat and wide, this seems to be exaggerated by the four-door version.
I wouldn’t describe it is huge, but it is on the upper limits of comfortable for most vehicle trails.
