  1. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

I dunno why we need to make this into a conspiracy theory. Maybe it's a fill plug not a drain plug and someone just misspoke somewhere in the game of telephone. The internet is full of horror stories but I'm going to go with innocent until proven guilty.
  2. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

If the vehicle was off warranty and I was looking at $3-4000 out of pocket for this repair, I'd be a lot more skeptical. But they're doing it for free and say it'll be done in the first half of next week, so I can suffer the inconvenience of the awful automatic transmission in this Mustang for...
  3. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

Apparently it's Ford policy that the loaner must be another Ford. I guess they think it'd be bad PR or something. I asked Enterprise and they said Ford was only paying for "up to a full size car" which, whatever that means, apparently doesn't include any of the AWD/4WD SUVs. At this point I'm...
  4. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

If only I had the facilities to do the work myself, I'd have taken it off your hands
  5. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

Mine is a base manual non-locking so it should be the 4.46 based on this post, for whatever difference it makes.
  6. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

Oh yeah good idea. I'll edit the OP to contain the full story too.
  7. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

Got an update from my service advisor: the rear end assembly should come in tomorrow, which is great news! However he said it's a big job and might not be done until Monday or Tuesday... by which time I will already be out of state. They said I can keep the loaner for that time, still it's a...
  8. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

I can ask if they've removed the cover yet but my guess is they're not planning to do any more work on it until the replacements come in. I did ask and he said they have looked at the gears (didn't send me a picture though) and that's why they want to do the warranty repair. I think my advisor...
  9. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

He was in fact able to get me a picture and well, I think we can all agree this is more than normal wear. He said this is "one of" the chips they found. Can't tell *what* it is from this angle and at this resolution but... definitely more than the expected amount of glittery powder.
  10. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

This is where I wish I'd seen a picture of it... maybe they still can.
  11. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

They did give me a loaner, it's just that it's a convertible Mustang which isn't going to serve me very well in the snow. I asked if they had anything else but it was the only Ford (policy dictates it had to be another Ford) they could give me that day.
  12. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

Oof that's what I was worried about. I guess my question is really, do you think it's safe to keep daily driving for that many months? The advisor talked about it as if it could fail at any time, but then again he's not the actual mechanic doing the dirty work. I wish I'd asked for a picture...
  13. Dealership found metal chunks in rear end just before Oregon trip

Around 2 weeks ago I took my Bronco (2023 base manual 2dr) in for its 30,000 mile service, which is the first major service where they do more than change the oil and top up the washer fluid. It had been driving great and not making any noise, so I was surprised when later that afternoon I got a...
  14. Bigger wheels for Base model, questions about fitment

Can I use it to remove the 30mph minimum for the auto high beams? I live in the mountains where there's no street lamps to illuminate the roads after dark. The system does a perfectly good job of dimming to not blind other drivers, but I'm stuck manually bumping the stalk at low speed for as far...
  15. Bigger wheels for Base model, questions about fitment

I'll look into FORSCAN. Looks like I'll need a $60 dongle but next to the price of the wheels that's nothing. The performance tune requiring premium is a bit of a turn off... regular is bad enough here in California. But nice to know there's an option if I ever decide I need the extra power.
