We met a fella in his 70's at the end of our Uwharrie day who was driving a late 80's Samurai.

Video I found states it is a 19mm. And now I remember that is correct.
It also states to check it hot, at operating temps.

Near the rear corner, above the pan is an 19mm plug.
It feels like it is on with 350 ft/lbs. of torque mainly due to not a lot of room for a ratchet wrench to loosen it.
Inside/under it is a plastic dipstick that fits in the hole.

@mjp2 hit the nail on the head there. Common issue with the Expy and Excursions with the rusty rockers being an indicator of some larger rust issues in general.
I personally would not put my family in something akin to that situation unless I had no other choice for family hauling and could not...
I'd like to see your mount design. I already have some ideas, but I also tend to overbuild or over-engineer stuff too like it has to survive re-entry from orbit.
