Georgia Bronco

A club dedicated to Bronco owners in Georgia.
Just bought Bronco yesterday. We have no experience off road. What’s an easy off road trail in the Georgia area for a beginner? Thanks in advance for your help.

Congrats on the new Bronco. To directly answer your question; Forest Service Roads in North Georgia are going to be easier, have great views in elevation, and some are within cell phone range, but most areas are not. Depends a lot on your Bronco build. Like do you have Sasquatch, front and rear lockers, rock rails, etc How “new” to off-roading are you? Like, do you have any gear, compressor, tire repair kit, first aid, recovery gear? If starting from scratch, no worries, not as daunting as it first sounds. The Bronco Trail App is a good download that lists a lot of Georgia trails and those that say easy, generally are, plus you can download them for offline use when actually on the trails. Guys here go out all the time, so you definitely want to ride with a small group for the first few times. Very nice folks in this Georgia club who are helpful and patient. We were all new at some point and it’s fun to learn the hobby.

Welcome aboard. Like MM4B said, don't get overwhelmed, just get in it and drive.

Honestly the most daunting part with being in Dallas is the 1.5-2 hr drive your gonna have getting to North GA.

Appreciate the feedback so far. We have a 22 Wildtrack so Sasquatch pkg is on it and we have the 35” mud wheels.

We don’t have any gear. Sounds like connecting with a group the first time is a good way to go. Just figured most groups aren’t on easy trails.

@Slcdad9 There are some who tackle the more complex stuff, but most just like simple drives in nature, so you can just post when the itch hits you. A WildTrak will go just about anywhere without much concern. If you want a few simple things to start, A first aid kit is always a smart carry. Air compressors have a ton of opinions, but get what you can afford, that’s just above emergency only usage. If you enjoy going off-roading, you can always upgrade this and an extra compressor at the house is never a waste of money. Feel free to DM any of us who’ve replied for details on any stuff. A handheld GMRS radio can come in handy, but mostly for bigger groups, so that can wait. Any tire repair kit from Amazon is good to take. A guy found out last week on a ride I went on what the risks of driving on street pressure on even a gravel and dirt road can do to a tire. He wasn’t prepared, but the group was able to help him get back rolling. More than anything, airing down saves your back from hurting too much at days end.

@Slcdad9 Subscribe to notifications on this Georgia Bronco B6G group. At least every 3-4 weeks someone is organizing a group trail run in N. Ga. I'm a novice too. Went on my 1st trail run 3 months ago, and 3 more since then - all posted on this Georgia group. I skipped one b/c it looked to be a bit more than I felt comfortable with. But otherwise, the 4 I've done were fairly lite off-roading, 90-percent 4x2. It's fun when you run up on something a bit more challenging than you had anticipated, but mostly it's just fun getting out of the rat-race for a few hours and into nature.

Very easy and pretty at top: Calbeck in Calhoun. It’s in the Johns Mountain WMA, forest road 955. It’s gravel most of the way, then when you get to the top it opens up with dirt and nice views. I wouldn’t worry at all going up there alone. You could hike back if your battery dies or something. Terrain is not a concern. more of a concern will be the gravel that’ll stick in those new wrangler tires and be thrown up onto your doors when you hit pavement. Mine did that for the first few hundred miles or so. after the first forest service road we drove on, my wife and I got out and plucked rocks from the tires. Also I’m not sure which WMA land requires permit but I went ahead and bought a GA fishing permit just in case

I went to high school out in Dallas so can confidently say theres not much in terms of offroading (unless you want to go mudding but not my cup of tea). The WMA in either Calhoun (johns mountain) or Dallas (sheffield) offer very laid back nature driving on maintained roads.

I will say the views and scenery in North GA are far more appealing. I try to post my outings with some form of lead time. I plan to be out every other weekend camping and driving in the fall and will post those trips up for any to join in on.

The best piece of advice I can give is to download the maps of whatever area you are visitng to your phone before heading out.

Congrats and welcome @Slcdad9. Lots of great info already provided and like mentioned, I've used the Bronco Trail App, OnX and some others to find some easy trails / roads around Ga. Easy drive up to Lake Conasauga was an easy drive through the mountains with the bonus of a hike around the lake. You can get there from Elijay or Chatsworth. Also, one of our first trips we made was to Cache's Valley Rd. near Cherry Log, Ga. A couple of water crossings, with solid bottoms and some really nice scenery. I'm in Acworth, so it seems any time we want to venture off the beaten path, we first must drive an hour or more on the beaten path. :)

@rws I like that last sentence and it’s so true. It’s a slog to get out of the city, so I leave early, but the rewards when I do are just hard for me to describe; basically back in my element. Heading up to Elijay next weekend for the “Bacon” festival; yep, to hang out with my best friend’s parents and their RV. They have a Wrangler, so we’re sure to head out to the woods at some point for sure. BACON! Yea!

@MadMan4BamaNATL We often wind up going in or around Elijay whenever we venture out. And I just became aware of the Elijay Bacon Fest and are making plans to be up there on that Sunday. :)

And as you mentioned, once you get out of town, and find those spots to enjoy, it's all worth it!
