The best resource is local clubs / groups. OnX doesn't have 15% of the trails around here, it's a good starting point, and does have many of the roads I travel, but it doesn't formalize them as trails and is weak for discovery of new ones on the maps. I've found when I want to explore an area while sitting at home, a combination of Google Maps, Google Earth and OnX works. Google Maps satellite view is actually quite useful as you can often see which areas are rocks, sand, desert, etc. Earth 3D view is then good for scoping out the terrain.

There is only one other acceptable way to do it. <-- (movie reference) Grip it and rip it! Go out in the desert and find out where that road goes. Then use OnX to find your way out. :)

The OnX looks gorgeous on the display if nothing else.

Congrats! The book that @BulldogBear mentions is a fantastic way to get yourself accustom to the trails in the area. Make sure you don't go out alone if at all possible. Not sure what area you are in but we do a number of group runs as well. I try to post group runs that our Arizona Broncos Facebook group is putting together here as there are some on here who do not use FB. We also try to do some runs specific to newbies with some instruction involved. Rest assured though, that if you go on a run with us there will be plenty of experience there to help you out and no question is a bad question! Feel free to PM me directly if you have any questions at all (things you need or don't need, is a trail easy or hard etc...)... Glad to help get you in the dirt!
