@Mattwings any recommendations on lodging/camping for Friday/Saturday? Sounded like some folks were mentioning that it might be difficult to find availability for this weekend. Also, how is cell phone reception on the island? Will we be able to receive the last minute updates if we plan to arrive on Friday?

@edernest You can call Wa-Wen resort, they have camping spaces and cabins for rent. I don't know if any are available for this weekend.
Pappy's Resort also has cabins, again I don't know availability.
Trails Head resort is another spot for camping both RV and tents. Additionally they have rvs that can be rented.
Drummond Island resort also has camping....check availability.
For those that are less particular, there are literally hundreds of free camping sites around the island not far off the main roads. All you need is to download a free camping permit from the MiDNR website and fill it out. Post in the site you choose.

ATT has the best reception on the island for cell carriers. Near the ferry you will have service no matter what provider you have. once off the beaten path, NOT SO MUCH. On the north side of the island you may have service, however it will be from Rogers in Canada. If you don't have international calling on your plan that can get pricey.

Lodging is definitely tight. I would suggest you look at AirBnB or call around. Cell service is limited, particularly with Verizon, but we are planning to get the updates out by e-mail Friday afternoon. We will use FRS/GMRS channel 7 for the ride and general communication, but obviously it’s limited in range. Note, as of yesterday the fiber outline that delivers phone and internet had been damaged, so for the most part, it’s hard to contact or communicate with anyone directly on the island. Did you register and get the first ride packet?

Oh wow, hadn't heard anything about the comm lines being cut. Nothing like a last minute challenge. Yes I did receive the ride packet and I'm registered. I was able to reserve what looked like the last rustic camp spot at trailhead campground (at a jeep friend's recommendation) so I'm currently planning on driving up on Friday

Looks like central dispatch posted this update about the communication line break:

*****RESTORED*****
At 0130 hours on 9/21/22, Central Dispatch received notification that the compromised line has been repaired. We have begun receiving 911 calls at our dispatch center from the affected areas.
In a follow up call to the company to confirm the repair has been made, they have stated that they are confident the issue is resolved.

As an added weird situation, the larger ferry isn’t in service. Expect a 3hr wait crossing each way. Bummer, but it will be worth the wait!

I will have to look at the Ferry schedule. I will be driving up Saturday morning then home again after the ride.

I dont expect too many cars trying to get onto the island at 6am so I should be good. hope I dont regret that....lol

Sorry for the late notice, I just got a puppy sitter lined up. I didnt want to to subject them to having to ride around all day in the truck.

Where are most people staying friday evening? I will be trying to catch everyone before they head for the trails.

Whoever I passed on I 75 headed north.....*wave* . It was at the grayling exit. lol
