Newbie to off-roading, so I have a stupid question for you:

When it comes to Forest Service Roads, are these legal to use for the general public? Are there some basic rules or etiquettes to follow when using them?

Its good question, its also a bit of a complicated answer.
To be fair I'll let you know from my experience.
I have been wheeling for about 20 years, and biking the back roads since the late 80's.
I never wheel alone, and always let someone know my destination.
As for the roads stay away from the locked gates and be cautious about traveling down a road that has a open gate that you don't have access to the keys.
Be Curtis to all users ( they might be the ones helping you one day )
Always watch for active logging , when possible set your communication gear to the posted channels to see if the area is being used . All heavy trucks and equipment have the right of way , they are working and my not see you.
Best of all be curios explore and have fun . We have the biggest playground.

@Trooper19 Great tips, thank you! So I assume these roads are legal to use? Other than the locked ones (obviously).

Actual FSRs are open for public use, with recreation values being held very highly. The legislation is somewhere in the Forest Act or similar. I believe that resource roads constructed and maintained under Road Permit can be closed to the public under certain circumstances though. I work in forestry and really should have this nailed down better so at some point will try to look this stuff up.

@Lakelife36 I was reading about some closures, like after the flooding in November. Makes sense they’d close some after that.

Most FSRs are on crown land, unless you come across gates or no trespassing signs then you’re free to travel along them. Always yield to any logging trucks or other equipment, usually you won’t run into anything especially on weekends.

This site is good to look up for any closures or hazards. They did close the entire district back in November/December (without much enforcement though) but most roads are open again. Keep in mind the Chilliwack district is pretty much from Bowen Island to Boston Bar

If you guys follow the 4wdabc on Facebook or better yet, join the association, there are tons of resources and lots of people who spend a lot of time on these roads and trails. I have found it to be an invaluable resource. Plus, most of the people are really cool and welcoming of new off-roaders.
