Replacing 4” speakers on the dash and rear pods.

Yes, I have used the search and you have to read through hundreds of posts to see what exact speakers people are using.

I have read thru the hundreds of posts and consensus seems that any aftermarket speaker will make a positive difference in the quality of music playback over the factory offerings. I think is a very subjective decision as to how something sounds is different to different people. I can’t hear for crap so I think I’ll wait and give the system a listen before I pull the trigger on anything. I wanted to have some cool upgrades for when I take delivery of my 202? Bronco. I’m getting BnO btw, and have been feverishly reading and “shopping” speaker upgrades. Crutchfield.com had great articles to help guide you. I did buy some blind spot mirror upgrades today, so I guess I saved myself hundreds of dollars!

My friend has a Wildtrak. I drove it today for 15 mins. B&O is 1000x better . Night and day difference. In stock form every thing needs upgraded to even compare to BnO. Need sub, amp, and speaker upgrades. I’m getting the soundbar just to see the difference with the stock stereo. There is a reason it’s only offered for stock stereo… because it sux so bad. No need for soundbar with B&O.

I just installed my Polk DB402 4" in the front and back last night. Man, what a difference! To be honest the stock base setup sounded better than the dealer mannequin that I got to check out early on, but this is worlds better. I used the Metra 72-5600's and it made hookup super easy. The rear pods are very clear, but still very limited by the head unit. Then when I did the fronts I tried 300k and 150k bass blockers, then no blockers. I ended up going without blockers, I was able to crank it up and not have any perceivable distortion, and the sound was a bit richer without the blockers. I'm happy with this set up and now have good fuller and clearer sound than before and true marine grade speakers to boot. I did pick up a JBL Nano sub for under the seat, but that will be for another day.

May i ask how did you get the Polks to fit? I purchased the same speakers and the mounting rings on the 4inch polks are small. Did you find and use a universal speaker mounting ring or just screw into the plastic around speaker?

I just rotated the speaker until 2 mounting holes lines up

Is there a way to have bass sent back to the rear pods, ie. via Forscan?

This topic has been covered thoroughly already on numerous threads Some reports seemed to have been able to get some change in sound with Forscan, but we do know if you have the dealer flash the computer as if you were installing the rear JBL sound bar you will get full range to the rear channels.

It would be nice to know what exactly the dealer does in the reprogramming. Having a full frequency output to the rear would definitely help with upgrades. A nice set of wake board 6.5" pods with highly efficient speakers would be a good upgrade and much cheaper than the JBL bar. Hilarious that the un-amped dealer accessory costs as much/more as the amped version still sold.

Most likely it just removes the high pass filter the stock head unit has on the rear channels.

Yeah, it's not a perfect fit, but doable.

They are a lot louder and clearer, I have a subwoofer for bass. You are not going to get much bass out of a 6 1/2 coaxial speaker no matter what you do.

Agree! That’s what most people do anyway, set the crossover to 80-120 hz on the coaxial’s and add a sub for anything below the crossover point. That way highs and mid is super clear because it’s not trying to reproduce a frequency it can’t handle. Especially as volume increases. That’s why the stock rear 4” has high pass from the factory head unit.

With a 80hz crossover you would get all this frequencies for good mid bass. What they could have done is given the ability in sync to turn on or off or provide selectable crossover frequencies you could choose.

Funny thing is, the rear speakers are identical to the front, INCLUDING the caps to by-pass the bass

Yes, the rings are a bit small. I centered and fastened them straight down to the plastic, no additional rings. For the rears, I removed one mounting ear and did the same. Hope that helps.

I am wondering what you did different than me. I can't get the rear covers back on as the tweeter sticks out too far. I took off the two tabs, Did you do any modifications to the speaker to get this to work?
